Clinton nonprofit won't let donor cancel $10.48 monthly contribution: report

A Seattle man who recently sought to end his monthly donation to a Hillary Clinton nonprofit group ran into a small roadblock: There was no way to cancel his contribution, according to a report.

Corey Koscielniak, 29, wanted to stop his $10.48 recurring tithe to Onward Together, the politican action organization Clinton formed after her 2016 election defeat, because the group disclosed little information on how it spent the money, he told the Seattle Times.

“Onward Together (OT) accepts payment information, but provides no ability to alter or cancel donations once the initial donation is received,” Koscielniak wrote in his complaint to the Washington state Attorney General’s Office.

Ronny Jackson won't return as Trump's personal physician

Rear Adm. Ronny Jackson will not return as President Trump's personal physician after withdrawing his nomination to run the Department of Veterans Affairs, Fox News has learned.

It was not immediately clear whether Jackson would stay with the White House Medical Unit. He already had been replaced as Trump's personal physician when the president nominated him to lead the VA last month.

The 50-year-old Jackson had been dogged by allegations about his prescribing practices and leadership ability, including accusations of drunkenness on the job and that Jackson "got drunk and wrecked a government vehicle" at a Secret Service going-away party, which Jackson denied.

North Korea says it will shut down nuclear testing site in May

SEOUL, South Korea — Seoul says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un plans to shut down the country’s nuclear test site in May and reveal the process to experts and journalists from the United States and South Korea.

Seoul’s presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said Sunday Kim made the comments during his summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday.

Yoon says Kim also said President Donald Trump will learn he’s “not a person” to fire missiles toward the United States. The Kim-Trump meeting is anticipated in May or June.

Yoon says North Korea also plans to re-adjust its current time zone to match the South’s. The North in 2015 created its own “Pyongyang Time” by setting the clock 30 minutes behind the South.

Comcast to Offer Low-Cost Internet to Low-Income Senior Citizens

According to recent polls, 85% of Americans use the Internet, but less than half of senior citizens have Internet access at home. This week, Comcast announced plans to improve the opportunity for older folks to get online by introducing a new low-cost Internet program for low-income seniors in San Francisco and, not surprisingly, retiree-friendly Palm Beach County, Fla.

The initiative is an expansion of a Comcast program called “Internet Essentials,” which began in 2011 to provide affordable Internet and computers to low-income families. Comcast recently boosted the speed of Internet Essentials from 5 Mbps to 10 Mbps. While this kind of service won’t allow a family of five to all stream different Netflix shows at the same time, the $9.95 per month program is speedy enough for grandparents to Skype with family living on the other side of the world. A free wi-fi router is included as well for Internet Essentials customers.

Trump to pull Feds out of K-12 Education

President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to start pulling the federal government out of K-12 education, following through on a campaign promise to return school control to state and local officials.

The order, dubbed the “Education Federalism Executive Order,” will launch a 300-day review of Obama-era regulations and guidance for school districts and directs Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to modify or repeal measures she deems an overreach by the federal government.

“For too long the government has imposed its will on state and local governments. The result has been education that spends more and achieves far, far, far less,” Mr. Trump said. “My administration has been working to reverse this federal power grab and give power back to families, cities [and] states — give power back to localities.”

He said that previous administrations had increasingly forced schools to comply with “whims and dictates” from Washington, but his administration would break the trend.

Trump threatens government shutdown in September if no wall funding

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress did not provide more funding to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

‘We come up again on September 28th and if we don’t get border security we will have no choice, we will close down the country because we need border security.’

Trump made a similar threat in March to push for changes in immigration law that he says would prevent criminals from entering the country.

Coast Guard assists boaters stranded on island in Chesapeake Bay

BALTIMORE — A Coast Guard aircrew safely recovered two men stranded on Adam Island in the Chesapeake Bay this morning.

The men intentionally ran their 17-foot vessel aground on the marshy, unpopulated island after becoming beset by foul weather Saturday night.

One of the boaters' fathers notified watchstanders in the Sector Maryland-National Capital Region’s command center at 9:45 a.m. today that the two men were still stranded and soaking wet on the island.

An already-airborne MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, diverted from a training flight to assist. The crew landed on Adam Island, recovered the two men and transported them to Salisbury Regional Airport in Salisbury, Maryland.

The boaters are scheduled to retrieve their vessel as soon as possible.

"Adverse weather conditions can suddenly emerge and impact anyone's underway voyage at any time," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Terrence Young, operations unit controller for the case. "That's why it's vital to continuously check weather forecasts in your area and prepare for the worst-case scenario by bringing appropriate safety gear and dressing for harsh conditions."

CIA Whistleblower: Trump Is Doing What Kennedy Tried To

Former CIA Officer and whistleblower Kevin Shipp says what is going on with Donald J. Trump “is an ongoing coup to remove a duly elected President.” Shipp contends, “This is a huge constitutional crisis like the country has never seen before. This makes Watergate look like a Sunday school class.”

On Friday, Shipp and other retired top officials at the CIA, FBI, DOJ and NSA held a press conference and demanded Attorney General Jeff Sessions prosecute top Obama era officials for obvious crimes against the incoming Trump Administration. Shipp says,

“We have a coup within our government right now at the senior levels at the CIA, DOJ and the FBI attempting to unseat a duly elected President who was elected by the American people and remove him from office...

This is, at worst, treason with senior officials in the shadow government or Deep State . . . to attack Donald Trump and remove him from office. . . . We have not seen anything like this since the Presidency of John F. Kennedy (JFK), when CIA Director Allen Dulles attacked him, and we saw what happened there...

There is crystal clear evidence that the CIA was, at least, involved with the cover-up of the JFK assassination. Now, we have the same thing happening again...

Remember what Chuck Schumer said, and it was chilling. He said, ‘If you cross the intelligence community, they can hit back at you six ways from Sunday.’ That’s what we are seeing now. It’s collusion or a coup with senior officials at the FBI, DOJ and CIA along with Robert Mueller to unseat an elected president.”

Pope Francis "..every human life is unique, and that if the disease is rare or very rare, it is still life that is so."

GREETING OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS
TO THE MEMBERS OF THE "UNA VITA RARA" ASSOCIATION

Sala Clementina
Monday, 30 April 2018

[Multimedia]

Pope Francis met with Giorgio and Rosita, founders of “Una Vita Rara”. Giorgio and Rosita founded this organization in 2016 after receiving a diagnosis regarding their son Davide in 2015. Their son was suffering from a rare thyroid malfunction caused by a gene mutation called Allan Herndon Dudley Syndrome (ADHS). People living with AHDS to experience physical and intellectual disabilities.
FULL TEXT Speech of Pope Francis to Una Vita Rara

Dear friends,

Thank you for coming! Thanks to the President, the father of David, who presented your story and also this initiative that brought you here in Rome in the sign of hope.

I am always happy to meet associations for research and solidarity on rare diseases. Of course, there is the pain of suffering and hardships, but it always strikes me - I remain admired - the desire of families to get together to face this reality and do something to improve it. You, Giorgio and Rosita, together with Davide, your son, have felt within you the urge to do something for him and for people suffering from a very rare disease, and for their families.

The name you gave the association: "A Rare Life", says a lot, because it expresses the reality of David, but also yours with him, in a positive, not negative. The negative is, we know, it is everyday reality. But this name says that you know how to look at the positive: that every human life is unique, and that if the disease is rare or very rare, it is still life that is so.

This positive look is a typical "miracle" of love. It is love that does this: it knows how to see good even in a negative situation, it knows how to keep the little flame in the middle of a dark night.

And love does another miracle: it helps to remain open to others, able to share, to be in solidarity even when suffering from a sickness or a heavy condition, wearing out in everyday life.

I believe that from this same attitude, of which I thank God, the 700-kilometer race was born, started ten days ago from your home and arrived today in Rome. A race for life and hope. I congratulate all those who gave life to this "Race of the Rare Words" and with all those who collaborated.

Thank you again. I will pray for you and your association. And you too, please, pray for me. Thank you.

Saint April 30 : St. Marie de l'Incarnation : Founder of #Ursulines in #Canada

Marie de l'Incarnation, née Marie Guyart, founder of the Ursuline order in Canada, mystic, author (born 28 October 1599 in Tours, France; died 30 April 1672 in Québec). With two Ursulines and Madame de la Peltrie, Marie landed at Québec 1 August 1639 and established a convent in the lower town (courtesy Library and Archives Canada). Marie de l'Incarnation, née Marie Guyart, founder of the Ursuline order in Canada, mystic, author (born 28 October 1599 in Tours, France; died 30 April 1672 in Québec). Life in France and Spiritual Vocation
As a child, Marie Guyart, daughter of a master baker, showed unusual spirituality. Her husband, Claude Martin, died in 1619 after two years of marriage, leaving her with a six-month-old son and a bankrupt business. Urged to remarry, she withdrew into secluded meditation and prayer and on 24 March 1620 experienced a mystical and emotional "conversion." She decided to withdraw from the world, but her sister and brother-in-law called on her to help their failing carrier business. Under Marie the business prospered but visions continued to haunt her.
Founder of the Ursuline Order in Canada
In 1632, though heartbroken at leaving her son, she entered the Ursuline cloister at Tours. She took her vows in 1633 and taught Christian doctrine for six years. From her reading of the Relations des Jésuites and her visions, she concluded that her vocation was in Canada. With two Ursulines and Mme de la Peltrie, she landed at Québec on 1 August 1639 and established a convent in the lower town. In 1642, it moved to a permanent stone building in the upper town. She worked zealously at educating French and Aboriginal girls, wrote numerous theological and spiritual treatises, an Iroquois catechism and Algonquian and Iroquois dictionaries (see Aboriginal Languages), and kept abreast of public affairs. Although cloistered, she received many notable visitors at her monastery. Canonization
In 1980, Marie de l’Incarnation, François de Laval, and Jose de Anchieta (the “Apostle of Brazil”) were officially declared “Blessed” by Pope John Paul II (this process is known as beatification and is often a step towards canonization, or the declaration of sainthood). On 3 April 2014, Pope Francis declared all three saints, using a process known as “equivalent canonization,” which does not require the verification of miracles made through the saint’s intervention. The canonization was celebrated on 12 October 2014 during the Thanksgiving mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix, Archbishop of Québec, led a delegation from Québec which attended the ceremony.

University of Texas to Treat Masculinity as a 'Mental Health' Issue

The Counseling and Mental Health Center at the University of Texas at Austin recently launched a new program to help male students “take control over their gender identity and develop a healthy sense of masculinity.”

Treating masculinity as if it were a mental health crisis, “MasculinUT” is organized by the school’s counseling staff and most recently organized a poster series encouraging students to develop a “healthy model of masculinity.”

The program is predicated on a critique of so-called “restrictive masculinity.” Men, the program argues, suffer when they are told to “act like a man” or when they are encouraged to fulfill traditional gender roles, such as being “successful” or “the breadwinner.”

Washington in uproar over 'disgusting' White House Correspondents' dinner comedy routine

Conservatives Saturday night and Sunday criticized the tenor and character of the White House Correspondents’ dinner after comedian Michelle Wolf ripped into Trump administration officials.

Wolf stunned the crowd at Saturday night’s dinner with biting jokes about President Trump and his White House, including top aides like counselor Kellyanne Conway and press secretary Sarah Sanders, who attended the dinner in his stead.

Trump, as he did in 2017, skipped the dinner in order to hold a campaign rally in Washington, Mich.

Pope Francis warns of Bad Curiosity and Gossip “it is a temptation that we will always have." Homily

Pope at Mass: Watch out against curiosities in the virtual world
During Monday’s morning Mass, Pope Francis said children are curious and they find many bad things online. They should be helped not to become prisoners of this curiosity. He urged Christians to ask for the Holy Spirit who gives certainty against this unhealthy curiosity. Pope Francis on Monday called on Christians to pray for the grace to be able discern between good and bad curiosities and to open one's heart to the Holy Spirit who gives certainty in life. Celebrating his morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta residence in the Vatican, the Pope described the interaction between Jesus and his disciples in the day’s Gospel as a healthy “dialogue between curiosity and certainty". Healthy curiosity of childrenNoting that life is full of curiosities, the Pope stressed on being able to differentiate between good and bad ones.  He said children’s inquisitiveness is healthy, because as they grow up they notice things they don’t understand and seek an explanation.  This, he said, develops autonomy and is also a “contemplative curiosity" , because children see, contemplate, do not understand and ask". Gossip – bad curiosityOn the other hand, the Pope denounced gossip as bad curiosity, as it is being nosey about the life of others that ends up dirtying others, making people understand things that they do not have the right to know. This kind of bad curiosity "accompanies us all our lives” he said warning it is “it is a temptation that we will always have."
Bad curiosities online
However, there is nothing to be frightened of but one must be careful.  The Holy Father said there are many curiosities, for example, in the virtual world, with mobile phones and other things...   He said children visit sites curious to see and they come across many ugly things.  “There is no discipline in that curiosity,”  the Pope warned and urged adults to help young people live in this world, so that the desire to know does not became a desire to be curious that makes them end up as prisoners of this curiosity.
Holy Spirit brings certainty
On the other hand, the Pope regarded the curiosity of the apostles in the Gospel as healthy because they wanted to know what will happen and Jesus responded by giving them a certainty that "never deceives", promising them the Holy Spirit who will teach them everything and remind them of everything He has told them.
The Pope said it is the Holy Spirit who brings certainty in our life, but not like a bundle of certainties.  In the measure we proceed in life and ask the Holy Spirit opening our hearts, he said, the Holy Spirit give us the certainty for that moment, the answer for that moment. The Holy Spirit is the companion on the journey of a Christian, the Pope said.
This talk between Jesus and his disciples, which is “dialogue of between human curiosity and certainty,” the Pope explained ends with this reference to the Holy Spirit, “the companion of memory” that leads to “fixed happiness” that does not move.
Pope Francis thus exhorted Christians to go where there is true joy with the Holy Spirit, who helps them not to make mistakes.

Sprinkle-Loaded Birthday Cake Scones

Making Breakfast Sandwiches for a Crowd

Make a pan of veggie-loaded eggs and wrap up these easy breakfast sandwiches and stick them in the freezer for the next time you need a breakfast-on-the-go or you have a crowd to feed.

MUM, I am trying to make sandwiches on Sunday that I can take to work for the whole week.

Are you now, how’s that going then?

Well not that well. Do you have any ideas?

Actually yes I do.

Breakfast Sandwiches
That’s how the breakfast sandwich started and this is how it has finished. There are a couple of steps but believe me a few steps on Sunday will save you on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…

I’ve used quite flat rolls in both wholewheat and white roll and I’ve also used soft style rolls. They need to be sturdy enough to withstand freezing and soft enough to be great reheated. i haven’t tried sourdough..yet, and can’t imagine how they might turn out but let me know if you do.

These breakfast sandwiches are really the best if you have access to a sandwich press, oven or even a microwave so the the cheese melts . You can see I have used grated sharp cheddar and that’s because I don’t like stringy tasteless Mozzarella cheese but hey, I am not going to judge if you do. You could also use sliced cheese if you prefer that but I am sticking to the classic cheddar for my melt and flavour but you could use Gruyere, Havarti or anything else you like. Get a production line going.

The trick is to make sure you don’t make them too thick. Bake the sliced egg nice and thin and don’t pile the ingredients too high. This makes time from freezer to plate less and if you melt a minute in the micro wave and then pop in a sandwich press or oven that there are no frozen bits inside. you can also put them into a fry pan and toast with the foil still on..(saves washing up)

I had dozens of these in the freezer. I also have lots of house guests and the stash I had was depleted in a very short time.

Give them a try and let me know how you go.

Making Breakfast Sandwiches for a Crowd

Author:
Recipe Type: Breakfast
Serves: 12 sandwiches
Ingredients
  • 40 ml olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • ½ cup red pepper, diced
  • ½ cup corn kernels, cooked
  • ½ cup chick peas, cooked
  • 1 Tablespoon oregano , dried
  • 6 eggs
  • 125 ml milk
  • 40 ml tomato sauce (2 tablespoons)
  • salt and pepper
  • 12 flat bread rolls
  • 500 gm grated cheddar cheese
  • 24 slices of ham (or more if you like)
  • 12 pieces of baking paper
  • 12 pieces of foil
Instructions
  1. You will need a dish approximately 30 x 23 cm or 9 x 12 inch. Mine is square. Grease with oil or butter. You'll also need a fry pan
  2. Set the oven to 190 C / 360 F.
  3. Start by making the egg frittata mixture. Heat a fry pan on medium and add the olive oil then the onion and saute till softened. Add the oregano, add red pepper and corn and saute for a couple of minutes without colouring before adding the chickpeas. Stir well.
  4. Pour the vegetables into the baking dish you prepared earlier
  5. Beat the eggs, milk, tomato sauce and salt and pepper together till well combined and pour over the vegetables spreading flat.
  6. Bake the frittata till just firm. Check at 15 minutes and leave in for longer if still not completely set. Depending on your oven it could take 15-25 minutes. (my oven is slow and not fan forced)
  7. Take the egg out and set aside to cool while you prepare the bread. Cut all the rolls down the middle and open them.
  8. Pile the slices of ham onto each roll. Top with grated cheese and then a slice of frittata. You should get at least 12 squares from your dish (23 x 30 cm). Measure them out evenly before slicing into squares.
  9. Once filled put the top on the sandwich and wrap in baking paper and then foil.
  10. The sandwiches can be popped into the oven in the foil and paper jacket once defrosted for a few hours. This is my favourite way to eat them. When you open them the cheese is melted and hot. They are also fantastic defrosted and popped onto a sandwich press unwrapped. They can also go into a fry pan to be toasted on both sides with the foil on. this saves on washing up. If you need to microwave them, take out of the foil and unwrap a bit before microwaving. This method will give you a very soft melty roll if that's your thing
Notes
You could add finely cut bacon to your eggs if you want to skip the ham. Just toss 2 finely chopped rashers in with the onions and saute. This will take a little longer as the bacon needs to be heated through well.

Concrete Steps toward Reconciliation in Korea as Catholics Pray and “...invoked the protection of the Blessed Mary and the Korean martyrs.."

The reconciliation between North and South Korea is receiving great attention. It is something that Catholics in the South have been praying for. Bishop You, of S. Korea said, “We entrust to our Korean martyrs peace in Korea. Agenzia Fides reports that he explained, “I was deeply moved while watching on television the meeting of the two Korean leaders. Then I prayed, I thanked God and gave my blessing too. I am truly happy because a new era has opened:  ...God works surprising great wonders”.  Bishop Lazzaro You Heung-sik, is from the diocese of Daejeon and president of the Bishops Commission for Society. He added, “I invoked the protection of the Blessed Mary and the Korean martyrs: to them I entrust this journey towards reconciliation peace, for the good of the entire Korean people and all humanity”.Bishop Lazzaro elaborated: “The event was deeply emotional. Today in Korea there is an air of great optimism and hope. Something which seemed impossible only a few months ago when there was talk of war, today has actually happened. Today we say to the Lord: complete Your work. We are brothers: as Koreans we are one people”. Great merit, he adds “must be attributed to president Moon, who is a Catholic, and he believed deeply in this possibility and worked hard for this result”. Asia News reported Three days after the signing of the "Panmunjom Declaration", the two Koreas are already taking the first concrete steps towards reconciliation and the "cessation of all hostile acts".
Asia News said, the North Korean national news agency Knca announced that the country will bring the clock forward 30 minutes, abolishing the "own" time zone, established in August 2015, to overcome the legacy of the Japanese occupation (1910- 45) that had imposed it. The Seoul and Pyongyang clocks will be back on the same time on May 5th.

Added to these acts is a promise made by Kim Jong-un to the South Korean president Moon
Jae-in during their talks: in May Pyongyang will close the Punggye-ri site, under Mount
Mantap, allowing South Korean and American experts and journalists to supervise the

Punggye-ri is already unusable as it has collapsed. Kim Jong-un intervened on the question:
"two of the four tunnels" are still usable.

Today's Mass Readings and Video : Mon. April 30, 2018 - #Eucharist

Monday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Lectionary: 285

Reading 1ACTS 14:5-18

There was an attempt in Iconium
by both the Gentiles and the Jews,
together with their leaders,
to attack and stone Paul and Barnabas.
They realized it,
and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe
and to the surrounding countryside,
where they continued to proclaim the Good News.

At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth,
who had never walked.
He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him,
saw that he had the faith to be healed,
and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet."
He jumped up and began to walk about.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done,
they cried out in Lycaonian,
"The gods have come down to us in human form."
They called Barnabas "Zeus" and Paul "Hermes,"
because he was the chief speaker.
And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city,
brought oxen and garlands to the gates,
for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice.

The Apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments
when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,
"Men, why are you doing this?
We are of the same nature as you, human beings.
We proclaim to you good news
that you should turn from these idols to the living God,
who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.
In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways;
yet, in bestowing his goodness,
he did not leave himself without witness,
for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons,
and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts."
Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds
from offering sacrifice to them.

Responsorial PsalmPS 115:1-2, 3-4, 15-16

R. (1ab) Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Not to us, O LORD, not to us
but to your name give glory
because of your mercy, because of your truth.
Why should the pagans say,
"Where is their God?"
R. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Our God is in heaven;
whatever he wills, he does.
Their idols are silver and gold,
the handiwork of men.
R. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.
or:
R. Alleluia.
May you be blessed by the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.
Heaven is the heaven of the LORD,
but the earth he has given to the children of men.
R. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.
or:
R. Alleluia.

AlleluiaJN 14:26

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Holy Spirit will teach you everything
and remind you of all I told you.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GospelJN 14:21-26

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Whoever has my commandments and observes them
is the one who loves me.
Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father,
and I will love him and reveal myself to him."
Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him,
"Master, then what happened that you will reveal yourself to us
and not to the world?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Whoever loves me will keep my word,
and my Father will love him,
and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words;
yet the word you hear is not mine
but that of the Father who sent me.

"I have told you this while I am with you.
The Advocate, the Holy Spirit
whom the Father will send in my name --
he will teach you everything
and remind you of all that I told you."

Saint April 30 : St. Pius V : #Pope and #Reformer - Died 1572

St. Pius V
POPE AND REFORMER
Feast: April 30

Feast Day: April 30
Born: 17 January 1504 at Bosco, diocese of Alessandria, Lombardy, Italy
Died: 1 May 1572 in Rome, Italy
Canonized: 22 May 1712 by Pope Clement XI
Patron of: Bosco Marengo, Italy= Information:
Born at Bosco, near Alexandria, Lombardy, 17 Jan., 1504 elected 7 Jan., 1566; died 1 May, 1572. Being of a poor though noble family his lot would have been to follow a trade, but he was taken in by the Dominicans of Voghera, where he received a good education and was trained in the way of solid and austere piety. He entered the order, was ordained in 1528, and taught theology and philosophy for sixteen years. In the meantime he was master of novices and was on several occasions elected prior of different houses of his order in which he strove to develop the practice of the monastic virtues and spread the spirit of the holy founder. He himself was an example to all. He fasted, did penance, passed long hours of the night in meditation and prayer, traveled on foot without a cloak in deep silence, or only speaking to his companions of the things of God. In 1556 he was made Bishop of Sutri by Paul IV. His zeal against heresy caused him to be selected as inquisitor of the faith in Milan and Lombardy, and in 1557 Paul II made him a cardinal and named him inquisitor general for all Christendom. In 1559 he was transferred to Mondovì, where he restored the purity of faith and discipline, gravely impaired by the wars of Piedmont. Frequently called to Rome, he displayed his unflinching zeal in all the affairs on which he was consulted. Thus he offered an insurmountable opposition to Pius IV when the latter wished to admit Ferdinand de' Medici, then only thirteen years old, into the Sacred College. Again it was he who defeated the project of Maximilian II, Emperor of Germany, to abolish ecclesiastical celibacy. On the death of Pius IV, he was, despite his tears and entreaties, elected pope, to the great joy of the whole Church.
He began his pontificate by giving large alms to the poor, instead of distributing his bounty at haphazard like his predecessors. As pontiff he practiced the virtues he had displayed as a monk and a bishop. His piety was not diminished, and, in spite of the heavy labours and anxieties of his office, he made at least two meditations a day on bended knees in presence of the Blessed Sacrament. In his charity he visited the hospitals, and sat by the bedside of the sick, consoling them and preparing them to die. He washed the feet of the poor, and embraced the lepers. It is related that an English nobleman was converted on seeing him kiss the feet of a beggar covered with ulcers. He was very austere and banished luxury from his court, raised the standard of morality, laboured with his intimate friend, St. Charles Borromeo, to reform the clergy, obliged his bishops to reside in their dioceses, and the cardinals to lead lives of simplicity and piety. He diminished public scandals by relegating prostitutes to distant quarters, and he forbade bull fights. He enforced the observance of the discipline of the Council of Trent, reformed the Cistercians, and supported the missions of the New World. In the Bull "In Coena Domini" he proclaimed the traditional principles of the Roman Church and the supremacy of the Holy See over the civil power.
But the great thought and the constant preoccupation of his pontificate seems to have been the struggle against the Protestants and the Turks. In Germany he supported the Catholics oppressed by the heretical princes. In France he encouraged the League by his counsels and with pecuniary aid. In the Low Countries he supported Spain. In England, finally, he excommunicated Elizabeth, embraced the cause of Mary Stuart, and wrote to console her in prison. In the ardour of his faith he did not hesitate to display severity against the dissidents when necessary, and to give a new impulse to the activity of the Inquisition, for which he has been blamed by certain historians who have exaggerated his conduct. Despite all representations on his behalf he condemned the writings of Baius, who ended by submitting.
He worked incessantly to unite the Christian princes against the hereditary enemy, the Turks. In the first year of his pontificate he had ordered a solemn jubilee, exhorting the faithful to penance and almsgiving to obtain the victory from God. He supported the Knights of Malta, sent money for the fortification of the free towns of Italy, furnished monthly contributions to the Christians of Hungary, and endeavoured especially to bring Maximilian, Philip II, and Charles I together for the defence of Christendom. In 1567 for the same purpose he collected from all convents one-tenth of their revenues. In 1570 when Solyman II attacked Cyprus, threatening all Christianity in the West, he never rested till he united the forces of Venice, Spain, and the Holy See. He sent his blessing to Don John of Austria, the commander-in-chief of the expedition, recommending him to leave behind all soldiers of evil life, and promising him the victory if he did so. He ordered public prayers, and increased his own supplications to heaven. On the day of the Battle of Lepanto, 7 Oct., 1571, he was working with the cardinals, when, suddenly, interrupting his work opening the window and looking at the sky, he cried out, "A truce to business; our great task at present is to thank God for the victory which He has just given the Christian army". He burst into tears when he heard of the victory, which dealt the Turkish power a blow from which it never recovered. In memory of this triumph he instituted for the first Sunday of October the feast of the Rosary, and added to the Litany of Loreto the supplication "Help of Christians". He was hoping to put an end to the power of Islam by forming a general alliance of the Italian cities Poland, France, and all Christian Europe, and had begun negotiations for this purpose when he died of gravel, repeating "O Lord, increase my sufferings and my patience!" He left the memory of a rare virtue and an unfailing and inflexible integrity. He was beatified by Clement X in 1672, and canonized by Clement XI in 1712.

Trumps Salary

On Friday, the Trump administration released their annual report to Congress on White House Office Personnel. It includes the name,
status, salary and position title of all 377 White House employees.

The report also said that Trump decided not to take a dime of his
salary, instead he donated it to an amazing cause! (see below).

The report also showed that President Trump is far better at saving
money than Obama was. The total annual White House salaries under Trump are $35.8 million vs. $40.9 million under Obama, a savings of $5. million. Here are some other key findings.

There are 110 fewer employees on White House staff under Trump than under Obama at this point in their respective presidencies.

Nineteen fewer staffers are also dedicated to The First Lady of the
United States (FLOTUS). Currently, there are only five staffers dedicated to Melania Trump vs. 24 staffers who served Michelle Obama (FY2009)

However, it's what the report said Trump did with this salary that
has everyone talking.

Instead of taking his salary, Trump donated all $400,000 to the
Department of the Interior where it will be used for construction and repair needs at military cemeteries! AMAZING! It's so great to have a President who loves our brave military men and women so much!

Oh, and where's the media coverage of this? That's right, they don't cover anything decent that the President does.

BUT WE WILL!

Debt-Enabled Asset-Bubbles Are On A Crash With Demographics

For anyone who may have been unconscious or in outer space for the last 20 years, here are the Coles Notes:

If finance had not been able to ‘securitize’ debts (turn them into assets) and sell them to speculators/investors over the past two decades, then debt creation could not have gone to such extremes and consumers would not have been able to borrow and spend themselves so far into financial ruin.

If western consumers had not been able to borrow themselves so far into ruin, they would also not have been able to buy so many goods from Asia and other developing nations for a time.

Asia and developing nations would not then have been able to mint so many new millionaires and billionaires in their governments and businesses who then funneled capital into western property markets, and western property markets would not have appreciated so far beyond domestic income gains.

If property prices had not increased so far beyond income gains, then households would not have had to borrow so much just to get a roof over their heads or a post-secondary education.

If they had not been able to borrow so much, property prices, education and related services would never have been able to rise so much for so long, and become so unaffordable for the masses.

But they did.

NOAA/NWS document: wind turbines affect weather radar, create false storm impressions

From the Watertown Daily News, and the “law of unintended consequences” department comes an inconvenient truth from the National Weather Service, that upon further investigation appears to be a nationwide problem for the WSR-88D doppler weather radar network used to predict, track, and analyze severe weather. According to NOAA’s Radar operations center, forecasters are faced with “little or no workaround”.

Part of the reason is that the WSR-88D national deployment in the early to mid 1990’s preceded the mass deployment of wind turbines to provide “green energy”. They had no way of knowing then that their field of view would be polluted by an army of rotating blades.
