The summer before last, I was driving north on Division Street downtown on a Saturday and noticed the flag at the war memorial at Rt. 50 was blowing in the strong wind hanging on by just the bottom clip. not wanting that flag to blow down and touch the ground, I stopped and assessed the situation. The halyard was old and frayed and the top clip was either broken or otherwise unrepairable, so I gathered up the flag in my arms, took it off the remaining halyard clip, and drove it down to the City Police station and turned it over to them. The officers thanked me for the effort and took the flag in. I did see it flying again about a month or two later when I was waiting at the stoplight, but only for a short time.
Now, its been missing for at least 10 months or more. I stopped and saw the reason why. The halyard line is still frayed and rotted, and the brass clip is broken as well. This is “Happening” right across the street from Mayor Jake Day’s office. One would thing that a City Mayor and member of our Military Service would think a little more of a war memorial dedicated to the servicemen who fought for our Peace and Freedom we enjoy today. Ace Hardware, Lowe’s and Home Depot all carry the hardware items shown in the pictures here all for about $25.00 or less. I guess Jakie Boi doesn’t value the sacrifices of our war dead past the $25 mark.
