Armand Vigna - who had been a football coach for more than 40 years - was a much loved member of staff at Livonia Franklin High School in Michigan.
The 84-year-old died on Tuesday of COVID-19, 12 hours apart from his wife Ruthie, 83.
The two were living at the Henry Ford Village Retirement Community in Dearborn, Michigan. Friends say it is fitting they passed just hours apart.
Michigan currently has 43,811 cases and 4,054 recorded deaths due to coronavirus.
Its governor has extended a state of emergency declaration including a stay-at-home order that will keep non-essential businesses closed until at least May 28 - despite armed protesters storming the capitol demanding an end to the shutdown.
