Fall Guys' release was reportedly the biggest PC launch in more than four years. According to analyst firm SuperData, Mediatonic's smash hit raised $185 million (£145 million) when it released last month, more than any PC game has made in its first month since 2016's Overwatch.
Admittedly, Blizzard is likely to have blown Mediatonic out of the water, reporting 10 million players the month after its shooter's release, and therefore sales that were probably in excess of $400 million (£314 million). But for the Fall Guys team to even be mentioned in the same breath as one of the games industry's biggest powerhouses is indicative of the bumble royale's extreme popularity.
Superdata states that 8.2 million players bought Fall Guys on PC, which isn't that far off Blizzard's Overwatch milestone. Much of the difference in revenue is likely to come from the cheapest version of the shooter being priced at $40, while Fall Guys currently sells for only half that. Nevertheless, a stellar launch month made the game the top grossing PC game in the world during August, beating the likes of League of Legends, Fortnite, and CS:GO. It's worth noting that the game's success hasn't been limited to PC — as well as shipping all those copies on Steam, Fall Guys found a huge audience on PS Plus.
Whether Fall Guys manages to maintain this level of success remains to be seen, particularly as Among Us is now also competing in the 'Twitch-friendly game with colourful, bean-shaped characters' category. But with the game's medieval-themed second season expected to launch in just a couple of weeks, Mediatonic's smash hit could have plenty of life in it yet.
